House Rewire

June 18, 2013 - By timlaight

At Sky Electrical this is probably a question we are asked every day and in short when it comes to house rewires there is no easy answer. Your fuse board was more than likely installed to comply with the IEE regulations appropriate and in force at the time of installation. However as time has passed new technology has provided us with safer systems that protect our properties from fires and personal injury.

If you have an older style unit with rewireable fuses it only needs to be upgraded if you want to install additional circuits. In most domestic situations this requires not only circuit breakers but also modern residual current devices or RCDs for short. An RCD detects very small currents that are leaking out of your system through a fault or worse still a person. They automatically trip in fractions of a second. They can literally be a life-saving device; I certainly would not be without them in my home and most electricians would agree. So if you can make it a priority it certainly could be a life saving investment.

Although there is no legal requirement to upgrade your fuse board, the law requires you to demonstrate a duty of care to your tenants. Often an electrical survey will suggest that a unit is upgraded and you will only really be able to demonstrate a duty of care has been achieved by upgrading and issuing a “Satisfactory Certificate” electrical safety certificate.

At Sky Electrical we are specialists in house rewires,  replace consumer units every day and on completion we issue an NICEIC certificate that demonstrates your electrical system is safe, so if you want peace of mind in your home you need to ring Sky Electrical Ltd on 020 8894 1799.
