School Electrician London

July 23, 2013 - By davidhogben

Over the years, our school Richmond electricians have been getting an increasing number of calls, particularly from  schools in London , which are concerned with overheating and blowing main fuses.

These situations are more often than not caused by overloading of the main supply because as time passes, schools and businesses have increased their power consumption without due regard to whether or not the supply can sustain these increases in demand.

Modern equipment which was rare or non-existent years ago such as IT suites, air conditioning, heavy kitchen equipment etc. all contribute to these increases and many schools and other institutions now consider that these are the norm.

Unfortunately, when these buildings were originally designed, the electrical supply was sufficient for the demand then but now they are overloaded and the consequences of these overloads can ultimately be quite catastrophic.

In one instance, during a cold spell, a school took it on itself to install a significant number of electric heaters and so overloaded the supply that part of the main service head melted and the whole supply had to be turned off.  In that case a generator was installed for nearly three months until the local supply authority could bring in a new supply and the cost of the fuel to run the generator was running into thousands of pounds per month.

Another case was were the kitchen was continually causing an overload peaking during the lunchtime service and afterwards when the dishwashers were running; here Sky Electrical attended on three occasions to replace blown main fuses and it was only a matter of time before that service head failed.  Fortunately in this case the school broke up for the holidays and the new supply could be brought in before the children returned.

So it can be seen that it is important for schools and businesses to check their electrical system before an overload occurs and at Sky Electrical we can help by carrying out real-time long-term monitoring of the electrical supply to identify prospective overload situations and by providing practical solutions.  Please give one of our school electricians a call on 020 8894 1799 to discuss and we will be pleased to help.
