Why Should I Use an Electrician to Install the Electrics In My Home?

August 30, 2013 - By timlaight

Having been a self-employed electrician for 20 years and now running a team of a dozen electricians I have been on both sides of the fence.  Looking back to the time when I ran my business from a van it’s hard to understand how I would run a one-man operation these days.

The amount of paperwork involved is so great that I would be working 16 hours days just to keep up with it all. The number of regulations and compliances we have to adhere to is so large in the 21st century that I imagine a one-man operation would struggle to stay abreast of them.  At Sky Electrical, however, we run a full office administration and support system so our dedicated team of electricians can concentrate on their work while the office deals with the necessary paperwork which covers insurances, Health & Safety, electrical certification, DBS checks as well as all the other usual matters.  Membership of our trade body the NICEIC means that we are required to maintain precise standards of electrical installation and records which are subject to annual scrutiny.

The fundamental differences between the one-man operation and a full-blown electrical contracting company lie in continuity of labour and hence the ability to fulfil contract schedules.  Both will have their portfolio of clients who require servicing but since the single man cannot be in two places at once then inevitably he will have to leave Client A to deal with, say, an emergency call to Client B.  If this happens during a time-critical contract, for example where electrical work has to be coordinated with other trades, then the consequences for the client may be stressful or costly.

It should also be borne in mind that a lot of electrical installation work requires a team of two at the very least to progress the job at a good rate and under these circumstances the single electrician will usually need to subcontract labour whereas the electrical contractor has a directly employed workforce so the quality of workmanship is constantly monitored.

For further information on this or any other electrical enquiries, or if you require an estimate or advice please call Sky Electrical on 020 8894 1799 and we shall be pleased to help.
