Do I need a House Rewire?

August 30, 2013 - By davidhogben

Electrical installations are a relatively new factor of life in Britain. The first homes had lighting installed at the start of the 20th century in 1905.It was until the period between the first and second world wars that it became commonplace to install wiring in every new house. We still find today the odd home that has the original wiring.  As we learnt from experience we gradually improved safety standards to prevent death and injury from electric shocks and now all modern systems incorporate earthing and sensitive circuit breakers that keep us safe in our homes.

Quite often we see houses that have no earthing on the lighting circuits or homes that have 1950s lead or rubber sheathed cabling. It is these homes that need an urgent rewire. These cables deteriorate to the point where they become dangerous. Most electricians will be able to visually check to see if your home needs to be rewired but ensuring you employ an electrician with enough experience and qualifications to give you the correct advice is not easy. To be conclusive all NICEIC approved contractors can carry out an electrical installation condition report. These reports will clearly identify faults with your installation and provide proof or not as to whether you need a rewire or not.

The process of rewiring a home is not easy and most of the cost is associated with the labour needed to install the cabling neatly and as unobtrusively as possible. The most difficult rewires are those that are carried out when a family is still using the home. At Sky Electrical we often advise our customers to either move out temporarily or carry out the work when you are on holiday, in fact we offer discounts on installation costs as we can carry out the work quicker when a client is not in residence.

If you think you need a house rewire our estimating staff have over 30 years experience in our trade to give you honest, informed advice so call us on 020 8894 1799.
