Picking a qualified Electrician

May 15, 2013 - By davidhogben

Having had the benefit of running a successful electrical contracting business for many years and employing qualified electricians, I am often wondering what a client looks for when selecting a qualified electrician and tradesman. How can we stand out among all the competition is my biggest conundrum?  There is a whole host of trade checking web sites (check out our reviews on Checkatrade.com), that rely solely on reviews from clients who are not tradesmen themselves.

Apart from being good value, punctual, pleasant and tidy (which should be a matter of course), how can a client with very little knowledge judge the technical knowledge, skill and experience of a company when selecting an electrical contractor?

In short it’s nearly impossible. Moreover, when most electrical works are hidden from view, how can a novice judge if the work has been carried out to industry standards?  The best advice I can give is to check on the NICEIC website. At least if you choose a contractor from there you know they are qualified, professional and  that they have attained all the necessary qualifications and most of all have adequate insurance to trade as a professional company.

No trade checking website checks all these fundamental requirements. Once a year Sky Electrical’s NICEIC Inspector even checks our record keeping and randomly picks a few jobs we have completed to look at to ensure we maintain our standards for our clients. Whilst this is no 100% guarantee at least a client can demand that the NICEIC rectify any issues caused by a rogue contractor.
