Our Testing Services

Electrical Inspection and Testing

All electrical installations deteriorate with time and use and so to ensure the safety of the users it is important that periodic inspection and testing is carried out by a competent person. An Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) should be carried out every 5 years. We also offer thermal imaging to show potential faults where loose connections are occuring.

Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR)

Compliance with the Wiring Regulations may be achieved by carrying out an Electrical Installation Condition Report (formerly known as a Periodic Inspection Report). As the name suggests, this is a report, not a certificate, and it provides an assessment of the in-service condition of an electrical installation compared with the requirements of the current regulations.

Private and Commercial Landlord Testing

In most cases landlords both private and commercial have a duty of care towards their tenants to ensure wiring systems and electrical equipment are maintained in a safe condition. An EICR inspection and test is a recognised method of demonstrating compliance. In the domestic letting market there is also a requirement to install fire detection sensors. We include this check if we carry out an EICR for you for a domestic let property.

Buying a Property and Getting it Tested

Costs of rewiring or upgrading an electrical installation can be expensive. A mortgage valuation or homebuyers report will only make general comments on the electrical services whereas an EICR can be used to give a full appraisal of the condition of the wiring.

Homeowners

The Wiring Regulations suggest that electrical installations in privately owned properties are inspected every 10 years. In practice however, most domestic installations over a few years old have probably never been tested. An up-to-date Electrical Installation Condition Report will give homeowners peace of mind that they are living in an electrically safe environment.

Portable Appliance Testing

It is important that electrical equipment is maintained as part of a Health and Safety policy. In addition to fixed wiring inspection and testing, Sky Electrical offers a complete portable appliance testing service from a very few items in, for example, a rented property, to large numbers of items in schools, offices, and other commercial and industrial premises.

Emergency Lighting Testing

In every workplace in the UK it is a requirement to have emergency lighting. This lighting needs to be maintained every year and a maintenance log must be filled out throughout the year to ensure the emergency lights work correctly should the power fail. We install and maintain emergency lighting systems to BS5266.

Ten Top Tips from an Electrician to Save Energy in Your Home

1. Convert all low voltage recessed lights from Halogen to LED, saves 80% of the electricity used by halogen lamps, compared to LED.
2. Fit Solar Panels and Battery storage systems to your house. The return on investment is about 5 years. Reduces reliance on the energy grid and provides energy security.
3. Fit ceiling mounted movement detectors to utility rooms, bathrooms, and hallways so the lights are not left on.
4. Switch energy providers to one that provides cheap rate off peak energy. Then store that cheap energy in a battery for use in the daytime, whether you have Solar panels or not. Night rate electricity is 400 to 500% cheaper than daytime energy.
5. Heat your hot water from cheap rate electricity at night and store it in a hot water tank.
6. Switch to an EV car and charge your car from cheaper off-peak power.
7. Make sure all your external lighting is LED rather than halogen. LED’s use 80% less energy than halogen lights.
8. Do you use a tumble dryer? The new heat pump dryers use 2KW less energy per hour than the traditional dryers. Moreover, use the delay start buttons on your appliances so the washing machine or dishwasher runs off cheap rate electricity at night.
9. Heat your liveable spaces with air conditioning units. A Heat pump provides heat 300% cheaper than traditional element heater.
10. Fit timers to all heaters so they don’t get left on inadvertently.
